Eduardo A. Calvo

Mr. Calvo is a partner in Calvo & Clark’s Guam office. He represents regional and U.S. clients, as well as Japanese and other Asian companies, in transactional and litigation matters in Guam and around the Pacific Rim. Mr. Calvo has extensive experience representing major hotels and other commercial developments in international transactional matters. His practice also involves complex cross-border litigation, arbitration and mediation, with special emphasis on matters involving fiduciary duty and breach of trust.

Admitted to practice in Guam and Hawaii, Mr. Calvo served as Associate Justice (part-time from 1996 to 1998) on the first panel of justices of the Supreme Court of Guam. Over the course of his career, he has played a major role in several high-stakes international litigation cases. For example, Mr. Calvo served as counsel to the probate estate of the late Larry L. Hillblom, founder of DHL, which included the administration, liquidation, and distribution of hundreds of millions of dollars in worldwide assets. More recently, he led the team representing the Japanese bankruptcy trustee for EIE International, a failed real estate developer, against Shinsei Bank in a matter that involved proceedings in Saipan, Guam, California, and Tokyo and culminated in a $200 million settlement in June of 2004 for the firm’s client.

Mr. Calvo has extensive experience in working with foreign counsel, particularly in Japan, Hong Kong and Phillippines, on international litigation and business matters. Mr. Calvo’s far-reaching business practice includes extensive experience representing U.S. and Asian companies in the development of high-profile hotel, golf courses, and resort properties in the region, including the Hyatt Regency Guam Hotel. While counsel to the Guam International Airport Authority from 1990 to 1994 he handled various transactions that funded large capital improvements on Guam.

Mr. Calvo has served as an officer or director on a wide range of corporate boards and business and community organizations. He has been a member of the board of directors of Bank of Hawaii (1997-2002), First Savings & Loan Association (1997-2002), and Title Guaranty of Guam (1994 to 2002). He has also served on the Governor’s Counsel of Economic Advisors (1996-1998); as Chairman of the Guam Real Estate Commission (1989-1994); and as a member of the board of directors of the United Micronesia Development Association (UMDA) (2004-present).

Mr. Calvo is a native of Guam. He received his B.A. magna cum laude in 1978 from Menlo College School of Business Administration and his J.D. in 1981 from University of Santa Clara School of Law. He was a partner in the firm of Carlsmith Ball until he left to establish Calvo & Clark in 1992 with Arthur Clark.
