Prominent Litigator and Environmental Lawyer Join Forces to Form San Francisco Office of Calvo & Clark
San Francisco, January 27, 2005 – Calvo & Clark LLP, a law firm representing major international companies in litigation and transactional matters across the Pacific Rim, announced today that Kathleen V. Fisher and David Roe have joined the firm as partners in a newly opened San Francisco office.
Founded in Guam in 1992, Calvo & Clark has a broad-based litigation and transactional practice with special expertise in complex cross-border litigation. Firm lawyers also have extensive experience representing Japanese companies in litigation and transactional matters in the United States. Calvo & Clark has played a major role in several high-stakes international litigation cases, for example serving as counsel to the probate estate of the late Larry L. Hillblom, founder of DHL, which included the administration, liquidation, and distribution of hundreds of millions of dollars in worldwide assets. More recently, the firm represented the Japanese bankruptcy trustee for EIE International, a failed real estate developer, against Shinsei Bank in a matter that involved proceedings in Saipan, Guam, California, and Tokyo and culminated in a $200 million settlement in June of 2004 for the firm’s client.
Ms. Fisher and Mr. Roe, each with a long and prominent legal career in California, will be joining forces for the first time and concentrating their practice on complex cross-border litigation and consumer class actions, including representation of Japanese companies in the United States.
Ms. Fisher was formerly a partner at Morrison & Foerster in San Francisco where she was lead counsel on a number of high-profile cases and served as worldwide chair of that firm’s 300-lawyer litigation department from 1993-1996. She continues to engage in a general business litigation and trial practice, including complex cross-border litigation and class actions. Ms. Fisher was also a longtime member of Morrison’s board of directors and formerly Managing Partner of Morrison’s headquarters San Francisco office.
Mr. Roe advises companies and governmental entities on complex domestic and international environmental issues and provides strategic advice to Calvo & Clark clients on litigation and transactional matters. Mr. Roe is one of the leading environmental lawyers in the United States, who in 25 years with Environmental Defense (formerly the Environmental Defense Fund) developed a wide range of innovative solutions for complex environmental and social problems. He wrote and led implementation of California’s Proposition 65, the landmark toxics disclosure law. He has also served as Senior Counsel to Human Rights First (formerly the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights), working on international issues, and as special counsel to the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California.
“I’m tremendously excited to join forces with David Roe, as well as my friends at Calvo & Clark, whom I’ve worked with many times over the past few years,” said Ms. Fisher. “ I believe that we’ll be bringing something unique to the legal market – a carefully-chosen team of high level business advisers and litigators who can work successfully across borders and jurisdictions to achieve great results for our clients.”
“The high-concentration, high-synergy style of Calvo & Clark, and the quality and warmth of the lawyers it’s attracted, made an irresistible combination for me,” Mr. Roe said. “I’m hoping to bring clients some of the same strategic perspectives and guidance with new approaches that I’ve been able to develop in my work so far.”
“Bringing on Kathy and David as partners in San Francisco substantially increases our capability to handle major litigation and transactions for clients in the U.S. and internationally,” said senior partner Ed “Champ” Calvo. “I’m delighted to welcome them to the firm.”
